I am going to sign up to the 10:10 campaign. I honestly don't know if the campaign will work, whether it will be all PR smoke that is soon forgotten - but why not have a go? It involves a commitment to 10% reduction in CO2 emissions, which is worthwhile.
Like most people I do different things at different stages in my life, often in response to changind external stimuli. And I have not measured very accurately in the past. So my approach is going to have to be to change how I make decisions, so that my energy use with this commitment will be 10% than it would have been if I had continued with my old mindset. I will have to justify all decisions.
I am already quite careful about energy use, so this 10% will be tough. I'll spend my way out of some of it - for example, buying loads of wood in to replace the cheaper oil-fired boiler. We can look at food miles even more carefully, and I already intended to grow more food. Travel will be tough ...
This year we had one short holiday in Yorkshire (driving); next year is our 25th wedding anniversary so we would like to go somewhere special - it will be difficult to do this at 90% of Yorkshire self catering! And we will want a family holiday in addition. I may have to consider carefully how I measure this (my car miles should be a lot less next year because I drove a lot to visit my ailing mother this year, and very sadly that is no longer necessary as she passed away in the Summer).
